The Blue River Chapter of the Wild Turkey Federation will conduct a workshop for existing and potential youth hunters. Participants will learn hunting techniques, safety, and calling, and are encouraged to bring their turkey calls. Snacks will be provided. Participants are encouraged to call and confirm, as space may be limited.

Participants will need to register for the event by March 28, 2009. Event is limited to the first 30 pre-registered youth age 15 and under. Youth must attend with a parent or adult. Event will include a morning gobble count, turkey biology, hunting tips and tactics, calling techniques and hunting safety. Included will be a sighting-in session at the shotgun range.

This event is open to all youngsters and their parents who are interested in learning more about wild turkeys and turkey hunting. The program will consist of conducting an early morning gobble count to listen for wild turkeys gobbling on the roost and identification of turkey sign in the field. Demonstrations will be conducted on turkey calling and types of calls, proper gear, hunting techniques, and cleaning and cooking tips. Sign up for this event will begin on March 16, 2008 by registering at the property office or by calling 574-946-4422 during office hours 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday.

Youth turkey workshop will focus on turkey hunting basics, turkey biology and behavior. Participants will learn how to look for turkey sign, participate in a gobble count, learn how to properly pattern a shot gun and learn about turkey calling techniques.

Minnehaha FWA will be having a Gobbler Scouting event which will encourage kids signed up for the youth hunt (the next weekend) to come out and listen for turkeys. After the listening, speakers will discuss turkey hunting safety, strategies, and wild turkey biology. Snacks will be provided prior to the scouting for those kids who show up at Minnehaha. Kids can participate whether they intend to hunt at Minnehaha, its satellite properties, or private lands. Sign up for this event will occur concurrently with the youth hunt sign up at Minnehaha. Space will be limited.

Pre-registration is required. AM Gobbler Count, calling demonstrations, turkey hunting techniques and safety, turkey biology and scavenger hunt, and patterning shotguns. This free event will be open to any youth who would like to learn more about turkey hunting in Indiana. Participants will meet before dawn to listen for turkeys gobbling. Demonstrations will take place for calling, setting up decoys, and turkey behavior. All participants will have the opportunity to pattern their turkey hunting shotgun with the assistance of NRA certified instructors. There will also be a scavenger hunt on the property for all things relating to turkey hunting. Kids will also get to make their own turkey call to keep and use for the upcoming season.

The Galena River chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation is sponsoring the event. Volunteers will do turkey calling demonstrations, hunting demonstrations and go into the field to listen for gobbling turkeys. DNR personnel will be presenting information on the biology of wild turkeys and on state laws and property regulations pertaining to turkey hunting. Participants will have the chance to “pattern” a shotgun at the Kingsbury shooting range. Participants may bring their own firearms and ammunition, however these items will be available for those that do not have them. Pre-registration is required by calling Kingsbury FWA anytime up to the day of the event. Breakfast food and will drink will be provided.

Crosley FWA will be hosting youth turkey hunting on April 18 and 19 for youth 15 years old and younger. Hunters may register from March 16-27, with a drawing held on March 30. Hunters selected in the drawing may check in at any time each day during legal hunting hours. When finished hunting, kids can return to the check station for lunch, handouts and pictures. Contact the Crosley office for more information.
